Body Dumper Track for Week of August 2, 2010

This week’s BD jam is so sick. We are featuring a true relic from the earlier portion of George Clinton’s career. Before there was Parliament Funkadelic, or even just Funkadelic, we were blessed with the Parliaments. “A New Day Begins” was released by The Parliaments as a single in April of 1968 on the Revilot label. It features a genius blend of freaky soul that is signature to the George Clinton catalog. There’s the swing and accessibility of a Motown hit. But Clinton’s unique vocal style and slightly obtuse arrangement makes this all his own.

George Clinton had been hired on as a song writer and producer at Motown by 1968. So you can undoubtedly hear the Motown influence. It was just a few years later that he morphed again and created Funkadelic. His footprint on soul and funk music is legendary to say the least. This fits perfectly for late night Dumper drives. Second guessing a romance that crumbled under life’s pressures. But remember, there’s always tomorrow.

Special thanks to Joe Jags for exposing me to this in a Ferndale living room circa 2005.
